Mission

Shalom è la storica testata edita dalla Comunità Ebraica di Roma. È stata fondata nel 1967, all’indomani della Guerra dei Sei Giorni, da un gruppo di intellettuali ebrei e dalla giornalista e scrittrice Lia Levi che lo ha poi diretto per circa 30 anni. Nel corso di oltre 50 anni l’obiettivo di Shalom è sempre stato quello di comunicare, far conoscereai suoi lettori le vicende, la storia, la cultura, il pensiero, la vitalità del mondo ebraico, italiano e internazionale, cogliendo costantemente le sfide del presente. Con un’edizione online, un magazine, sezioni di video news, e in inglese, dirette di eventi online, e una newsletter, lo storico giornale della Comunità Ebraica di Roma continua ad ampliare i suoi orizzonti, affermandosi come voce e fonte autorevole dell’ebraismo italiano. A lavorare alle diverse edizioni di Shalom, sotto la direzione della giornalista Ariela Piattelli, una redazione composta da giovani giornalisti, collaboratori storici, firme del giornalismo italiano e del pensiero ebraico.

La storia 

Nel 1967 con lo scoppio della Guerra dei Sei Giorni, quando in Italia si fa forte la richiesta di notizie dai vari fronti, emerge l’idea e l’esigenza di spiegare le ragioni di Israele attraverso un giornale. Così Lia Levi fonda, insieme ad Alberto Baumann e ad un gruppo di giornalisti e collaboratori, Shalom, una rivista che sin da subito ha un’anima culturale molto forte, perché sono quegli gli anni in cui cresce l’interesse per la cultura ebraica. Ma su un piano politico sono gli anni in cui la sinistra italiana si allontana dagli ebrei, con i quali, prima dello strappo ideologico con Israele, assieme aveva condotto tante battaglie, e in cui l’opinione pubblica troppo facilmente si schiera contro lo Stato Ebraico. E l’anima politica del giornale inizierà a pulsare ancor più forte quando arriva in redazione Luciano Tas. Si aggiungeranno altre, numerose, penne di collaboratori. Il giornale, dunque, cresce rapidamente, e acquista autorevolezza, con una linea editoriale ben definita.

Quando il 9 ottobre del 1982 un commando di terroristi palestinesi colpisce al cuore fuori dal Tempio Maggiore la Comunità Ebraica di Roma, e uccide un bambino di soli due anni, Stefano Gaj Taché, gli ebrei romani restano colpiti di fronte alla ferita più tragica e crudele a loro inferta sin dal 16 ottobre del ’43 e dalle deportazioni nazifasciste. Shalom è in prima linea nel denunciare il clima ostile, antisemita e antisionista, in cui avviene l’attentato. Shalom ne ricostruisce la cronaca degli eventi, e chiede verità e giustizia. Una giustizia che non è mai stata fatta, perché neanche un terrorista ha mai scontato un giorno di carcere per l’attacco alla Sinagoga. Per continuare a chiedere giustizia, quest’anno, in occasione dei 40 anni dall’attentato alla Sinagoga di Roma, è stata pubblicata, con il contributo del Museo Ebraico di Roma, una edizione speciale di Shalom Magazine con un’inchiesta, approfondimenti, e rivelazioni che si sono susseguite in questi decenni. Distribuito presso il Museo Ebraico, lo speciale rappresenta un pezzo importante della memoria della Comunità Ebraica di Roma, attraverso il quale per la prima volta è possibile raccontare ai lettori internazionali una pagina di storia importantissima per gli ebrei italiani.

Shalom oggi

Nel corso dei decenni il giornale ha mantenuto la sua autorevolezza, affermandosi anche come fonte per i media italiani e internazionali su ciò che accade nel mondo ebraico. Sviluppando le sue attività sul sito Shalom.it, e sui canali social, la testata partecipa alla vita dell’informazione della stampa ebraica e nazionale. «Shalom, il giornale della Comunità ebraica di Roma, è da oltre 50 una tra le voci più autorevoli dell’ebraismo italiano e romano. – spiega la presidente della Comunità Ebraica di Roma Ruth Dureghello – Nel corso della sua vita, Shalom ha sempre affrontato ed approfondito le sfide del presente. Da sempre il giornale è impegnato nella lotta all’antisemitismo, nel raccontare l’’ebraismo e Israele, la vita e la storia bimillenaria degli ebrei romani, offrendo ai lettori un grande strumento di conoscenza, al centro dell’operazione culturale della Comunità Ebraica di Roma.  Una scelta editoriale dettata dalla consapevolezza che proprio attraverso la conoscenza reciproca è possibile affrontare il futuro».

Gli ebrei romani, presenti in Italia da oltre 2000 anni, hanno sempre rappresentato un modello di integrazione e di dialogo: Shalom è un’autorevole voce di continuità di pensiero, confronto e dialogo, elementi fondamentali dell’ebraismo».

Shalom.it: il giornale online fondato del 2018 produce quotidianamente notizie divise in sezioni, dedicando molto spazio alla cultura. Il sito ospita varie rubriche, e da un anno una sezione che si intitola “Shalom World” che offre articoli e approfondimenti in inglese.

Shalom cartaceo: Come da tradizione da oltre 50 anni, Shalom viene pubblicato in un’edizione cartacea (adesso bimestrale). Ogni numero è dedicato ad un tema di attualità. Tra gli ultimi numeri quello sulla guerra in Ucraina, sul disagio giovanile, sull’educazione, e sui quarant’anni dell’attentato alla Sinagoga di Roma (pubblicato anche in versione inglese). All’edizione cartacea collaborano anche autorevoli firme del giornalismo italiano. Evoluzione digitale: Shalom è presente su Facebook, YouTube (dove c’è la web tv), Instagram, Twitter, e Linkedin. Newsletter: ogni domenica gli iscritti alla Newsletter ricevono “Le storie della settimana di Shalom” che sintetizzano le notizie principali.

Shalom is the historic newspaper published by the Jewish Community of Rome. It was founded in 1967, in the aftermath of the Six-Day War, by a group of Jewish intellectuals and by the journalist and writer Lia Levi, who then edited it for about 30 years. Over the course of more than 50 years, Shalom‘s goal has always been to communicate, to acquaint its readers with the events, history, culture and vitality of the Jewish world, both Italian and international, constantly grasping the challenges of the present. With an online edition, a magazine, video news sections, and an English section, live coverage of online events, and a newsletter, the historic newspaper of the Jewish Community of Rome continues to expand its horizons, establishing itself as an authoritative of Italian Jewry. Working on the various editions of Shalom, under the supervision of the Editor in Chief Ariela Piattelli, is an editorial staff composed of young journalists, historical contributors and renowned names in Italian journalism and Jewish thought.

The history

In 1967 with the outbreak of the Six-Day War, when the demand for news from the various fronts became strong in Italy, the idea and the need emerged to explain the reasons for Israel through a newspaper. So, together with Alberto Baumann and a group of journalists and collaborators, Lia Levi founded Shalom, a magazine that from the very beginning had a very strong cultural soul, because those were the years when interest in Jewish culture grew. On the other hand, on a political level these were the same years in which the Italian left began distancing itself from the Jews, with whom, before the ideological rift with Israel, it had waged many battles, and in which public opinion too easily took sides against the Jewish state. And the political soul of the paper began to pulsate even more strongly when Luciano Tas arrived at the editorial office. Other, numerous, contributors were added. The paper, then, grew rapidly and gained authority, with a well-defined editorial line.

When, on Oct. 9, 1982, a commando of Palestinian terrorists struck the heart of the Jewish Community of Rome outside the Great Synagogue, and killed a child only two years old, Stefano Gaj Taché, Roman Jews were stricken in the face of the most tragic and cruel wound inflicted on them since Oct. 16, 1943, and the Nazi-Fascist deportations. Shalom was at the forefront of exposing the hostile, anti-Semitic and anti-Zionist climate in which the attack took place. Shalom reconstructed the chronicle of events and called for truth and justice. A justice that was never granted, because not a single terrorist ever served a day in prison for the Synagogue attack. To continue to demand justice, this year, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the attack on the Synagogue in Rome, a special edition of Shalom Magazine was published, with the contribution of the Jewish Museum of Rome, with an investigation, insights, and revelations that have followed over the decades. Distributed at the Jewish Museum, the special issue represents an important piece of memory of the Jewish Community of Rome, through which for the first time it is possible to tell international readers about a very important page of history for Italian Jews.

Shalom today

Over the decades, the newspaper has maintained its authority, establishing itself as a source for Italian and international media on what is happening in the Jewish world. Developing its activities on the Shalom.it website, and through social networks, the paper takes part in the life of Jewish and national press information. “Shalom, the newspaper of the Jewish Community of Rome, has been for more than 50 years one of the most authoritative voices of Italian and Roman Judaism,” explains the President of the Jewish Community of Rome Ruth Dureghello, “Throughout its life, Shalom has always faced and explored the challenges of the present. The newspaper has always been committed to the fight against anti-Semitism, to telling the story of Judaism and Israel, the life and two-thousand-year history of Roman Jews, offering readers a great knowledge tool, at the heart of the cultural initiative of the Jewish Community of Rome.  A publishing choice dictated by the awareness that it is precisely through mutual understanding that it is possible to face the future.”

“Our goal is to broaden our horizons,” explains Shalom Editor in Chief Ariela Piattelli, “aiming more and more to tell what is happening in the Jewish world, to participate in the debate, to show the vitality of Judaism. Shalom continues to tell the story of the identity and memory of Roman and Italian Jews, who boast the oldest Jewish presence in the West. Roman Jews, present in Italy for more than 2,000 years, have always represented a model of integration and dialogue. Shalom is an authoritative voice of continuity of thought, discussion and dialogue, fundamental elements of Judaism.”

Shalom.it: the online newspaper founded in 2018 produces daily news divided into sections, devoting much space to culture. The site hosts various columns, and for the past year a section titled “Shalom World” that offers articles and insights in English.

Shalom in print: As has been the tradition for over 50 years, Shalom is published in a print edition (now bimonthly). Each issue is devoted to a current issue. Recent issues include one on the war in Ukraine, youth issues, education, and the 40th anniversary of the Rome Synagogue attack (also published in English). Renowned names in Italian journalism also contribute to the print edition.

Digital evolution: Shalom is present on Facebook, YouTube (the web TV section), Instagram, Twitter, and Linkedin. Newsletter: every Sunday, Newsletter subscribers receive “Shalom’s Stories of the Week,” which summarize key news stories.
